Gonzaga’s Anton Watson named WCC Player of the Week
The Gonzaga forward Anton Watson is expected to have a great game following his outstanding showing against USLAE on Wednesday night at the Maui Invitational. In the exciting 69-65 victory over the Bulldogs, he scored 32 points and finished fifth on the floor with an incredible 15 points from 14 field goal attempts.
Tuesday night’s non-conference game between Cal State Bakersfield and 11th-ranked Gonzaga, held in Spokane, Washington, presents Watson with the opportunity to put on another memorable performance..
Watson scored 23 points in his previous game on January 9, 2021, against Portland. This time, he added 25 more points in the second half to help the Bulldogs win 4-1.
Watson commented, “I was just talking to my brother, and I told him I just want to see the first shot,” in reflection on his performance. I continued since I was assertive and he gave me some frank stares. Maintaining my aggression; playing this game was essential to my success this year, and it felt fantastic to do so.”
With a double-digit average that leads all Gonzaga players, Watson presently scores 16.6 points per game and pulls down 8.0 rebounds. Graham Ike, a transfer from Wyoming, is just behind him with a contribution of 13.8 points per game.
The Zags appear to be a well-rounded team that can play both inside and outside, based on early tendencies. Without primarily depending on three-pointers (30.3% success rate) or free throws (63.7% success rate), they possess an outstanding 83.4 point average. They are among the top 15 teams in Division I according to Gyan News TV’s rankings for offensive and defensive skill.
This was an important save against USLAE, since Watson’s shots were key in winning the match against a formidable foe.
